Social Studies Unit Letters
Kindergarten Social Studies At Home Activities
Unit 1: “I Know Who I Am.”
Dear Families,
Our class is beginning a new social studies unit called “I Know Who I Am.” We will be learning about ourselves. We will discover what makes people unique, explore different feelings, and discuss the home and school environments. You can help your child get ready for this unit by doing the following activities.
While you may send in pictures or notes about these activities for your child to share in the classroom, it is not required “homework”. Choose the activities that work for you. Modify or change them as you see fit. Thank you for supporting our social studies program.
- Talk with your child about your likes and dislikes when you were a child. Did you like to read, ride a bike, or listen to music? Help your child compare those likes and dislikes with his or her own.
- Take the time to look at family photos with your child. Ask your child what the pictures show about the people in them. Invite your child to look for similarities among the family members.
- Help your child draw a picture of himself or herself participating in a favorite activity. Then draw a picture of your favorite activity when you were a child.
- Read the book All I Am by Eileen Roe or Kinda Blue by Ann Grifalconi. After you read, invite your child to talk about the things that make him or her a special person.
While you may send in pictures or notes about these activities for your child to share in the classroom, it is not required “homework”. Choose the activities that work for you. Modify or change them as you see fit. Thank you for supporting our social studies program.
